Technical Scrum Master (Infrastructure & Database)

 

Overview

The Technical Scrum Master serves as a servant leader, Agile coach, and delivery facilitator for Infrastructure and Database teams. This role is responsible for enabling high-performing technical teams by removing impediments, fostering collaboration, and driving predictable, transparent delivery of complex infrastructure and data initiatives. In addition to traditional Scrum Master responsibilities, this role requires strong technical acumen and the ability to engage in and follow technical discussions related to infrastructure, databases, and system architecture. The Technical Scrum Master will also operate in a hybrid capacity, providing partial Product Owner support by helping manage and refine the backlog, ensuring work is clearly defined, prioritized, and aligned with organizational goals. The ideal candidate has experience supporting highly technical teams, navigating ambiguity, and leading teams through process improvements while maintaining a strong focus on delivery outcomes and operational excellence.

 

Key Responsibilities

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or
  related field (or equivalent experience).
• 3–5+ years of Scrum Master or Agile delivery experience supporting technical
  teams.
• Experience working with Infrastructure, Database, DevOps, or Platform
  Engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) and backlog
  management practices.
• Ability to follow and engage in technical conversations related to infrastructure
  and data platforms.
• Experience using Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar Agile tools.
• Strong facilitation, conflict resolution, and servant leadership skills.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), PMI-ACP, or similar
  certification.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Familiarity with database technologies (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL,
  NoSQL).
• Understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code
  (IaC).
• Experience supporting operational or production support teams using Kanban or
  hybrid Agile models.
• Experience in environments undergoing Agile or DevOps transformation.

Agile Delivery & Technical Team Facilitation

• Lead one or more Infrastructure and Database teams through Agile ceremonies
  (Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives).
• Ensure work is clearly defined, technically understood, properly sized, and
  aligned with platform, infrastructure, and organizational priorities.
• Maintain visibility into team progress using Agile and operational metrics (velocity,
  throughput, cycle time, SLA adherence, and predictability).
• Proactively identify and remove impediments impacting delivery, including cross
  team and technical dependencies.
• Promote a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement within technical teams.

 

Technical Engagement & Facilitation

• Actively participate in technical discussions related to infrastructure, database
  management, system performance, and platform reliability.
• Demonstrate the ability to follow technical conversations and ask clarifying
  questions to drive alignment and decision-making.
• Partner with engineers, DBAs, DevOps, and architects to ensure shared
  understanding of scope, risks, and dependencies.
• Translate technical concepts into clear updates for non-technical stakeholders.
  Backlog Management & Partial Product Ownership
• Partner with Product Owners, engineering leads, and stakeholders to maintain a
  healthy, prioritized backlog for infrastructure and database work.
• Act as a proxy Product Owner when needed to ensure continuity in backlog
  refinement and prioritization.
• Ensure user stories and technical tasks are well-defined, include acceptance
  criteria, and capture necessary technical context.
• Balance priorities across operational support, technical debt, and strategic
  initiatives.

 

Coaching, Mentoring & Change Leadership

• Serve as a coach and mentor to the team and stakeholders on Agile principles,
  technical delivery practices, and team effectiveness.
• Support the adoption of Agile and DevOps practices across infrastructure and
  database teams.
• Guide teams through organizational and process changes, reinforcing standards
  and best practices.
• Facilitate workshops and working sessions to improve Agile maturity and
  technical delivery outcomes.
• Model servant leadership, fostering collaboration, empowerment, and healthy
  conflict resolution.

 

Stakeholder Alignment & Communication

• Collaborate with leadership, engineering, QA, security, and operations teams to
  ensure alignment and coordinated delivery.
• Communicate sprint progress, risks, dependencies, and technical impacts with
  clarity and transparency.
• Build strong relationships across technical and business stakeholders to support
  seamless execution.

 

Process Excellence & Continuous Improvement

• Champion Agile best practices tailored to infrastructure and database work (e.g.,
  Kanban for operational work, hybrid models).
• Track and analyze delivery and operational metrics to identify trends and
  improvement opportunities.
• Facilitate retrospectives and process reviews focused on improving reliability,
  scalability, and delivery predictability.
• Contribute to the evolution of Agile, DevOps, and operational processes across
  the organization.
