Manager – VAT & Tax

Job Purpose

Responsible for managing the hotel’s VAT and tax functions, ensuring full compliance with applicable Bangladesh laws, NBR requirements, Marriott standards, and internal financial controls. The position will oversee VAT and tax reporting, compliance, reconciliations, audits, documentation, and provide technical guidance to Finance and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage all day-to-day VAT and tax activities of the hotel and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, NBR requirements, and Marriott policies.
• Ensure timely preparation, review, submission, and payment of all applicable VAT and tax returns, statements, certificates, and regulatory documents.
• Maintain accurate and complete VAT and tax records, registers, supporting documents, challans, invoices, and other statutory documentation.
• Review purchase, sales, service, supplier, employee, and other transactions to ensure correct VAT and tax treatment.
• Monitor VAT deduction at source (VDS), tax deduction at source (TDS), withholding requirements, and ensure proper calculation, documentation, and deposit.
• Conduct regular VAT and tax reconciliations with the General Ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and other relevant financial records.
• Review and validate VAT invoices, tax invoices, withholding certificates, and supporting documents to ensure compliance and accuracy.
• Monitor tax and VAT liabilities, payments, adjustments, refunds, exemptions, and carry-forward balances.
• Ensure proper treatment of hotel revenue streams, including rooms, restaurants, banquets, events, service charges, rentals, and other income from a VAT and tax perspective.
• Provide VAT and tax guidance to Finance and operational departments and advise on the tax implications of new business activities, contracts, purchases, and commercial arrangements.
• Keep updated on changes in VAT, income tax, withholding tax, and other relevant regulations and ensure timely communication and implementation within the hotel.
• Coordinate with NBR, tax offices, VAT offices, auditors, consultants, banks, suppliers, and other relevant external stakeholders on VAT and tax matters.
• Manage and support VAT and tax audits, assessments, inspections, and inquiries, ensuring all required documents and explanations are prepared and submitted on time.
• Identify potential VAT and tax risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions to minimize compliance exposure, penalties, interest, and financial risks.
• Review tax computations and support the preparation of annual income tax returns and other statutory tax requirements.
• Ensure proper maintenance and reconciliation of tax deducted from employees, expatriates, suppliers, contractors, and other applicable parties.
• Support Finance leadership in tax planning, compliance reviews, budgeting, forecasting, and assessment of tax-related financial impacts.
• Prepare accurate and timely VAT and tax reports, dashboards, reconciliations, and management updates for the Director of Finance and senior management.
• Ensure all VAT and tax-related files are properly organized, updated, and readily available for internal, external, and government audits.
• Monitor outstanding VAT and tax matters and ensure timely resolution of notices, discrepancies, assessments, and regulatory issues.
• Work closely with Accounts Payable, Income Audit, General Cashier, Payroll, Purchasing, Cost Control, and other Finance functions to ensure consistent VAT and tax compliance.
• Review and strengthen internal controls related to VAT and tax processes and recommend improvements where required.
• Ensure confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive financial and tax information.
• Lead, coach, and develop team members involved in VAT and tax activities and ensure clear accountability for statutory compliance.
• Perform any other VAT, tax, compliance, or Finance-related responsibilities assigned by the Director of Finance or management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Accounting or Finance
• 5+ years' of experience of professional tax experience
• Strong communication and analytical skills
